![]() ![]() I’m not holding my breath, but it would be pretty nice if WG changed her back to an Essex when the ship is finally brought back into the game. Bunker Hill was changed from the old tier IX Essex to Midway when the operation was reworked. The second half of the scenario is inspired by the air raids on Rabul (the Japanese naval force’s staging area) in the following days, which were able to neutralize the threat of the massing Japanese cruiser force (which the IJN had been reluctant to commit to dangerous operations up until that point) and the Japanese airfields against the landings on Bougainville. The bot CVs involved even originally shared the names and classes of two of the historical ships involved in these raids: USS Saratoga (CV-3) and USS Bunker Hill (CV-17). The original restriction of the Op to tier VIII Allied cruisers was a nod to this, as is the name of the Operation itself. ![]() The outcome was a particularly dramatic contrast to the previous night engagements between similar USN and IJN forces during the Guadalcanal campaign a year earlier, where US cruiser and destroyer forces fared terribly against their Japanese counterparts. The first part of the scenario represents the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay off of Bougainville in November 1943. Task Force 39, centered around the Cleveland-class cruisers Cleveland, Montpelier, Denver, and Columbia, won a decisive night victory against the Japanese cruiser and destroyer force sent to bombard the Allied landing force, in no small part due to their advanced radar fire control systems. ![]() The original scenario was heavily inspired by historical events in early November 1943. Not even Allied DDs, CVs, or BBs were allowed! Funny you mention that: When Cherry Blossom first came out, only Tier VIII Allied Cruisers were eligible to play. ![]()
